Rein in Your Rain
It rained in Chicago last week. It felt like outside was anything but a happy place to be. Yet, if it never felt that way, if it never rained, we wouldn’t enjoy the lush greenery we see every day in this incredible city. I have found resisting rain to be unfruitful. Water is needed for life and without rainy days from time to time, things do dry up. Learning to embrace rain consistently is where the magic begins.
Love the Deluge!
In business and life, many things occur like a rainy day. These are things you automatically expect you will not enjoy but have to work through. They could be a conversation you have been avoiding having at work or an upcoming payment you can’t bear to make. Consequently, lots of precious time, thought, and energy are expended thinking about the upcoming rainy moments. It occupies your mind and sits in your stomach for days on end. And, as is nearly always the case, when the rain – that dreaded moment - finally does come it isn’t as heavy or as bad as imagined. In fact, somehow you find moments of joy.
In January 1995, I was living in Saudi Arabia (KSA) doing consulting work for Price Waterhouse implementing a new software system for Saudi Aramco. As an Arabic speaker, I was tasked as a team lead to be the first among a dozen expats from all over the world (Australia, Pakistan, U.K., among others) to visit remote bulk plants and air fueling operations. How remote? Let’s just say most Saudis have never been to these places. I would lay the groundwork for the new policies, procedures and systems to come shortly with the rest of the team following.
After not seeing a drop of rain in KSA from July 17, 1994 on, one day in January 1995 a torrential storm arrived. It happened early in the afternoon somewhere between the towns of Tabuk and Duba – where coincidentally KSA is building its megacity Neom. This desert rain was relentless for about 10 minutes. Dear me, I hadn’t seen rain that intense in my life ever, including during rainy season in Bangkok where I spent a month working on a different project. With no drainage for stormwater – it’s KSA, but why? – the roads flooded quickly. As I watched from my car, I had two conflicting thoughts. This is end of the world and I am actually really happy it is raining. An old dear friend I had not seen in 6 months is back in my life. Since then, I love all kinds of rain including drizzles, downpours, torrents, and deluges. In fact, I even named our firm…Agile RAINmakers.
Reign Over A Rain
Our business advises high growth clients. Over the years we have successfully advised a 3-person firm as it grew to become a 30-person firm. They love rain and they love raining in business there! Agile Rainmakers has leveraged numerous resources including its own skill and diverse experiences, long-time highly capable industry experts, and outstanding college interns. We serve our clients in a way that has them love all kinds of rain as we do. Now when it rains, it is joyous.
A testimonial Steve Colten and I received recently reads, “Fresh opinions and critical eyes were needed. The Q&A’s helped motivate internal discussion and decision making. The weekly meetings were helpful in keeping the decision-making process alive and moving forward…I respect both of your opinions and enjoyed our association. Any reason to continue that conversation, would be a great positive impact on our focus and business.”
